Lot Essay

H.M.S. Queenborough, 519 tons (bm.), was a sixth rate mounting 24 guns. Built by Sparrow at Rotherhithe, she measured 113½ feet in length, with a 32½ foot beam, and was launched on 21 January 1747. Her only recorded actions were on 29 April, 3 August and 10 September 1758 when Vice-Admiral Pocock (aboard the Yarmouth), with a squadron of nine ships including Queenborough, fought Commodore Comte d'Ache (in Zodiaque) in three inconclusive engagements off the Indian coast. All somewhat indecisive because of too strict an adherence to the 'Fighting Instructions', the last encounter was particularly bruising with heavy casulties on both sides. D'Arche withdrew and although Pocock was too mauled to pursue him, the action marked the end of French sea power in Indian waters. Queenborough survived all three battles only to founder in a cyclone off Pondicherry on New Year's Day 1761.
