FISHER, George (binder). Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru, National Museum of Wales. Formal Opening by His Majesty King George V accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Mary, [Cardiff: National Museum of Wales], 1927, 4°, 9pp. printed in black, red and blue, parallel text in Welsh and English, finely bound in contemporary blue morocco gilt by George Fisher with his name stamped in gilt on the inside back cover, covers with gilt-ruled borders enclosing a pattern of alternating gilt fleurons and small squares, the upper cover incorporating the title within double gilt-ruled borders.
George Fisher (1897-1970) was "one of the finest craftsmen of his generation" (see Maggs Bros. Bookbindings in the British Isles Part II, p. 250-1). After an apprenticeship at Rivière's, he took charge in 1924 of the Gregynog Press Bindery, at the suggestion of Douglas Cockerell, where he instigated the practise of having a small number of copies "specially bound". This binding is unusual in that it is signed "George Fisher" rather than "Gregynog Press Bindery".
