THE AVENGERS
A pair of black leather 'Kinky' boots labelled Anello & Davide, Size 4 - worn by Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale in the televison series The Avengers; accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Ambren Garland who did the costumes for the series stating that these boots ..were made for Honor Blackman by Mr Bruno of Anello & Davide for The Avengers series in 1962. They were the first boots worn by a female as a fashion accessory since button boots worn by Victorian Ladies, and were known in the '60's as Kinky boots. Later on in the series a pair of high boots were introduced, but these shorter boots started the fashion that has lasted for 30 years. The producer Leonard White, wanted a tough image for the fight scenes & the leather jerkin & trousers were designed by one of the three of us involved in the episodes.. (2)

Lot Essay

No other British T.V. series managed to epitomise the swinging 60s quite as well as 'The Avengers'. Honor Blackman who played the first of Steed's lethal female assistants, Cathy Gale described herself in September 1962 as ..a first for television. The first feminist to come into a television serial, the first woman to fight back. Cathy is all anthropologist, an academic, all brain and what she doesn't have in the way of brawn, she makes up for in motorbikes, black boots, leather combat suits and judo'.. Cathy Gales leather outfits made her a fashion leader, her leather combat gear was born out of necessity, she needed something that woulden't rip, Honor Blackman said that ..someone, Patrick, I think, suggested leather and after trying it the producers said "Great", so I wore it throughout the rest of the show. The only thing you can wear with leather trousers are leather boots, so they kitted me out with calf-length black boots and the leather thing was born... Cathy Gale's 'Kinky' boots became her trademark and towards the end of 1963 Honor Blackman and Patrick Macnee were persuaded to collaborate on a novelty record Kinky Boots, celebrating her leather footwear. This record became a hit when it was re-released in 1990 and reached the No.5 position in the charts.
