Further details
The story is based on a legend from Chonae in Phrygia (Asia Minor). A sanctuary of St. Michael, built on an antique heathen place of worship, had been established there in the sixth century. The well, with healing powers, and a church were guarded by a monk named Archipp. When enemies threatened to destroy both well and church, Archipp fearlessly held out until the arrival of the Archangel, who divided the waters by erecting a dam.
