Lot Essay

Comparable with the signed and dated picture by Pynas of Narcissus, in the National Gallery, London, inv. no. 6460. According to the Leyden exhibition catalogue, loc. cit., the unusual depiction of the angels, sitting on clouds, probably derives from an Italian, probably Bolognese, prototype.
The subject is taken from Genesis XVIII:2.
