Lot Essay

Dishes of this type appear to be unrecorded. They would probably have held small bowls or cups for the offering of food or drink. Very possibly from the same dessert service is the very unusual teapot and cover in the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, exhibited Chinese Export Porcelain, Hong Kong, November 1989-February 1990, no.3, pp.52 and 53, where Dr. Jörg suggests that it was made to special order for a European, possibly Dutch, client. This teapot has very similar floral sprigs on the body enclosed by a trellis of moulded 'rope' borders.
