Lot Essay

Ridley Scott's Gladiator was released in May 2000 and became an immediate box office success, winning five Academy Awards and four BAFTAs. British-born Janty Yates was responsible for the costume design and was rewarded with an Academy Award for her work, the first British success of the 2000 Oscar ceremony. Gladiator is admired for it's attention to detail and, to achieve a sense of accuracy, Janty Yates apparently used materials woven in the Atlas mountains of Morocco and had fabric woven from pure flax and wool and dyed with natural colors in the Czech Republic for some of the costumes.
