Lot Essay
Cf. Linda H. Roth and Clare Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, The J. Pierpont Morgan Collection, 2000, no. 101 for a similarly decorated coffee-can and saucer dated 1769, its yellow-ground likely a later addition; also no. 98 for a solitaire comprised of a pierced rectangular tray, footed cream-jug, sugar-bowl and cover and a cup and saucer. Linda Roth notes that it is rare to find a cream-jug in place of the more-usual teapot in a déjeuner of this type. Given that the present service also includes a cream-jug, it is likely that a sugar-bowl would have completed its compliment of pieces.
