It was the job of the fish carriers to take aboard the catches from the fishermen in the lower Thames and estuary and take them with all speed to the markets up the river as far as the Pool. Hence, the fine lines and heavy sail plan of these big cutters. On the right of the picture, a fisherman hails the nearest one to transfer his catch. Others follow beyond.
