The steel barque East African, 1731 gross tons, was built for Lang and Fullerton in 1895. Measuring 252½ feet in length, she had a 39 foot beam and a 22½ foot draught. Intended for large cargo capacity rather than speed, she was nevertheless a good sailer and was still in service at the start of the Great War, having been sold to Norwegian owners in 1911.
