JOHN HUNTER
John 'Sailor' Hunter will perhaps be best remembered as Motherwell manager from May 1911 to May 1946. He helped mould Motherwell into a side which regularly challenged Rangers in their Championship wins of the late 1920s/early 30s. In fact, the Lanarkshire side were runners-up on four occasions, third-placed on three occasions and their solitary Championship win was in season 1931-32. They were also runners-up in two Scottish Cup final's in 1931 and 1933, losing on both occasions to Celtic. During his time as Motherwell manager he also became club secretary (February 1913), a post which he retained until 1959.
'Sailor' was also a notable player in his day and travelled the length and breadth of Britain playing for a host of clubs prior to his appointment as Motherwell manager. Born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire on 6th April 1879 'Sailor' played for his local side Westmarch XI before joining Liverpool in season 1898-99. He helped the Merseyside team to their first-ever League Championship win in season 1900-01 before joining Heart of Midlothian in May 1902. He played for Hearts in the 1902-03 Scottish Cup final, which went to a second replay before Rangers finally defeated the Edinburgh side 2-0. In 1904 he joined Woolwich Arsenal and after a brief period there he signed for Portsmouth. After two seasons, he signed for Dundee and 1909-10 he made his second Scottish Cup final appearance scoring the winning goal (again in a second replay) against Clyde in a 2-1 win at Ibrox. His final move as a player was, ironically, to Clyde that very same year.
