The match, which was played in front of 80,000 fanatical Italian supporters started with Italy bombarding Frank Swift in the England goal. England suddenly hit Italy on the counter-attack and played a long ball through to Mortensen who raced from the half-way line into the penalty box and from an acute angle smashed the ball high into the net.
