Lot Essay

Although the identification of the sitters is not confirmed, the coat-of-arms on the portrait of the Lady is likely to be those of the Kiever or Kyver family from Cologne. The date of marraige between Gertrude Kiever and Peter Ostemann is not recorded but they made a joint Will on July 27 1628 the year after the present pictures were painted. Peter Osterman came from a Calvinist Family in Hamm and later appears to have converted to Catholicism. In 1626 he became a Proffessor at the Universiy of Cologne and published a paper on the Stigmatization of Witches in 1629.
