Chinese, 19th century
the borders with black ground gilt-heightened with chinoiserie dragons and pagoda scenes -- 16¾in. (42.5cm.) wide; with an ivory figural chess set, red stained and natural, the pieces carved in traditional costume, rooks depicted as elephants with castellated mounts surmounted by flags (one white flag missing), knights depicted as figures on horseback, pawns as figures with shields (one pawn replaced) -- king 4in. (10cm.), pawn 1¾in. (4.5cm.)
