A Pair of Massive Victorian Seven Light Ormolu Candelabra
English, mid 19th Century, after a design by Matthew Boulton
Each on shaped triangular base with three feet, rising to a circular pedestal and all elaborately cast as rock-work enriched with shells, scrolls and seaweed, the rocky outcrops each supporting a vigorously modelled figure of a Triton, one sporting the skin of a fantastic marine creature slung around his shoulders, the other entwined in a fishing net, these holding aloft cornucopiae issuing the scrolled and boldy leafed branches, the vase-shaped sockets with drip pans formed as a calyx of leaves, the central standard with flame finial
33½in. (85cm.) high
The design of these candelabra, especially in the central Triton section, is based on a candlestick produced by Matthew Boulton at his Soho Manufactory in the 1760s, the sketch for which appears in Boulton and Fothergill's pattern book fig.I. This was sold by James Christie in an auction of the 13th April 1771, as lot 28 'A tryton in dark bronz, holding branches for two candles in or moulu, on a bassment of the same neatly ornamented'.
