Lot Essay

The iron barque Lizzie Leslie was built for Turpie & Co. by Readhead's in South Shields in 1886. Registered at 370 tons, she measured 125½ feet in length with a 26 foot beam. She began her life trading out of North Shields, her home port, to the Mediterranean but changed to West Indian runs in 1869. In 1873 she was sold to J.T. de Garayalde, renamed Familia and re-registered under the Spanish flag at Porto Rico. Continuing her West Indies to Liveropool voyages for some years, she was sold again in 1891 to J. Amiel y Minot of Havana who renamed her Julia de Amiel. Early in January 1894, whilst bound for Hamburg from Laguna, she was partially dismasted (by storm damage?) and towed into Vigo where she was condemned and subsequently broken up.
