Lot Essay

The barque Egmont, 638 tons and measuring 155 feet in length, was built in Sunderland in 1853, trading to the Mediterranean from her home port of South Shields. Shown here off what is thought to be South Shield, she is flying the house flag of her owners Tully & Co. from her foremast head.
