Lot Essay

In the 1936-37 F.A. Cup final, played at Wembley on 1st May 1937 before 93,495 spectators, Sunderland defeated Preston North End 3-1, with goals from Gurney, Carter and Burbanks, with Preston's solitary reply coming from F.O'Donnell. This was the first-ever F.A.Cup final win by Sunderland.

Len Duns was born in Newcastle on 28th September 1916. He joined Sunderland from his local side Newcastle West End and played his first game for the club in season 1935-36 and between then and the outbreak of war he played 102 games for Sunderland scoring 32 goals. After the war he played a further 105 games for Sunderland scoring 14 goals before leaving the club at the end of season 1950-51.

This medal represents the first-ever F.A. Cup final win by Sunderland.
