Aston Villa won the Division 1 Championshop this season with 50 points, Sheffield United being runners-up on 48 points.
The above medal was awarded to George Frederick Wheldon who was born in Langley Green, Worcestershire on 1st November 1869. He joined Aston Villa in June 1896 from Small Heath and was transferred to West Bromwich Albion immediately following the above Championship win. He played for England at full International level on 4 occasions and the same amount for the Football League. Whilst with Villa he won Division 1 Championship's in 1897, 1899 and 1900 and was an integral part of the 'Double' side which also won the F.A. Cup in 1897. All Wheldon's major honours/medals apart from this Championship example were sold in these rooms, 20th November 1996, Lots 41-48 and 181-184.
