Lot Essay

Trumpets would have been played at race victories and moments of sacrifice. Depicted on Trajan's column are sacrificial scenes with trumpeters forming a procession. The Legio III Augusta at Lambaesis in Africa had 39 tubicines (trumpeters) and 39 cornicines (horn players). Festivals of the state religion included the Tubilustrium - the purification of the trumpets, on 23 March and 23 May.
