the ivory satin silk ground embroidered in coloured floss silks, the top register with an elegant couple meeting within a landscape, the gentleman holding a long stick and a plumed hat, the lady holding a fan, the ground with hares to the top, house, insects and flowers with birds on bushes; the centre with an elegant couple by a fountain, possibly Jacob and Rachel at the well, flanked by a camel and a horse, a lion, a peacock and a stag below, with moths and insects to the base--17½ x 10in. (43 x 25cm.), framed and glazed

Lot Essay

Jacob, Rachel and Laban (Gen. 29:9-30; 30:28-43; 31:17-55; 33:1-11): Near Haran Jacob met Rachel coming to water her father's sheep at the well. He moved the stone from the mouth of the well and watered Laban's sheep; then "he kissed Rachel, and was moved to tears".
