Lot Essay

According to the inscription on the inside lid, the sitter was 18 years old and held a fifth level position, presumably as a government or city official. The inscription on the case lid indicates that the portrait was taken during New Year's on year 16 of Meiji period. Taking one's New Year's portrait is a Japanese custom which is practiced to this day.
