Lot Essay

This image was taken in May of 1937, about a year after Migrant Mother, during an FSA assignment in the South covering tenancy. Lange's methods for taking unintrusive and respectful social documentary photographs were challenged and tested during her trips to the South where she experienced a racially charged social order that was not present in California.
