with a moulded twin plank top and twin panelled sides, the front profusely decorated with geometrical patterns and stained for contrast, the three panels with foliate filled lozenge decoration with dot and triangular detail to the corners, on stile feet with spandrels, one lost -- 43½in. Lot Essay

The decoration of this chest is typical of a small group of chests from Dorset. Thinly incised lines form the overall geometrical pattern which is then heightened with colour. A constructional feature common to the group is a strengthening brace beneath the bottomboards running the length of the chest.
