A JOINED NEEDLEWORK PANEL, FRANCO-SCOTTISH, LATE 16TH CENTURY
probably from a bed valence, tent stitched in coloured silks with a grid of four square panels each containing a tree with accompanying flora and fauna: the thistle with snail, moth and butterflies, pansy and hollyhock; the plum tree with peacock, deer, alligator and daisy; the apple tree with birds, squirrel and a rabbit with strawberries and clematis; the pomegranate tree with a serpent, all within a surround of scrolling branches with flowers and fruit, a pair of birds to the top--16½ x 47in. (41 x 117.5cm.), framed and glazed
