Lot Essay

In the course of many centuries, the mastery of the ivory carvers of Kholmorogy in the Archangelsk region gained wide fame. The most celebrated examples of ivory carving were created in this northern part of Russia in the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century when the basic traditions of local schools were formed and firmly established. Most of the objects carved in ivory were carved with precision and with perfection of technical workmanship.

The art of ivory carving blossomed and reached its highest point in the second half of the 18th century, when the most perfect creations were produced. The most outstanding of the carved ivory objects were those with portraits of Russian princes and tsars, copied from official medals and paintings. Other subjects were taken from the book, 'Symbola et Emblemata'. They were commissioned as gifts to various embassies and to Eastern emperors.
