Text volume bound in original vellum-backed marbled boards, titled in gilt on spine the plate volume: unbound within original box, constructed to match the binding of the text volume with vellum 'spine' and marbled covers.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 1750 COPIES, THIS NUMBERED 1299. A valuable record of the Merian drawings acquired by Peter the Great and now housed in St.Petersburg. Each drawing is described in detail: size, medium, pressmarks as well as giving botanical and zoological descriptions of the species depicted. An important addition to the corpus of work on this important early natural history artist.
