3 volumes, 12° (175 x 93mm). (Lacking half-title in each volume, volume I with title and B1 detached, B12-C1 and C12 likewise detached and slightly frayed at edges, title and B1 of vol. III detached, B12 and C12 in the same vol. almost detached, F1 torn through and affected by several other tears, occasional spotting throughout and some minor marginal tears.) Contemporary black straight-grained half morocco by Povey of Wotton, covers with roll-tool palmettes in blind, flat spines divided by triple gilt fillets, title and volume numbers in gilt, ornaments in blind (joints of vols. I and III rubbed and splitting, spine of vol. I also chipped). Provenance: Duke of Beaufort (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Written under the title of First Impressions between October 1796 and August 1797, when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one and, in fact, the same age as her heroine Elizabeth Bennet, Pride and Prejudice was famously rejected by Cadell who declined an invitation from Jane Austen's father, the Rev. George Austen, to read the manuscript. It was not until 1812 that the copyright was finally sold to Egerton for £110. Volume I was printed by C. Roworth in Caslon Pica roman, volumes II-III by G. Sidney in Pica roman by Vincent Figgins, and the work was published late in January 1813 in a probable edition of 1500 copies priced at 18 shillings in boards.
