SECOND AUGMENTED EDITION with additional illustrations. The portrait of Belon and the map of Mt. Sinai appear here for the first time. This work recounts Belon's 3-year journey (1546-1549) through Greece, Turkey, Palestine, Arabia and Egypt. 'His was the most documented account of the Levant which had appeared up to that time in French. Of importance is his description of Cairo after 30 years of Turkish occupation' (Blackmer). A naturalist, Belon records the local flora and fauna -- specimens of which are illustrated with woodcuts -- mineral resources, customs, dress, and antiquities, and he gives topographical descriptions of the major cities visited. Adams B-564; Nissen ZBI 304; Blackmer 115.
