2° (324 x 250mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Henry VIII after William Faithorne. Title in red and black with woodcut crown device, text within typographical rule. (Occasional light soil marks or light stains, Hhhh3-4 torn at upper margin.) CONTEMPORARY CRIMSON GOATSKIN BOUND FOR CHARLES II BY THE SAMUEL MEARNE BINDERY, covers with gilt fillet border and double panel of gilt fillets, at each side a small pyramid made up of tulip and foliate volutes surmounted by the royal cypher, at each corner an inverted pyramid made up of rose volutes and surmounted by the royal cypher in larger form, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the remainder with repeatrd royal cypher enclosed by a design of either drawer tools or tulip volutes, gilt board edges and turn-ins, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (slightly discoloured, upper cover with light scuff marks, upper joints splitting slightly but firm, lower cover more heavily scuffed, corners bumped, bottom edges rubbed). Provenance: Duke of Beaufort (bookplate). Second edition, [?] first issue. Wing 1505A, citing only three copies of this issue. London: James Cottrel for Samuel Speed and Christopher Eccleston, 1664. 2° (294 x 182mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles II by G. Tomlyn, title in red and black, 3 engraved plates, including portraits of Louis XIV and Philip IV of Spain by P. Stent. (K2 holed with slight loss, quires Z-Bb browned, Nn2v with small but heavy stain, quire Iii slightly browned and torn at lower margin.) Contemporary calf, covers with double gilt fillet and CENTRALLY-STAMPED ARMS OF CHARLES II, gilt spine compartments, gilt board and page edges (joints rubbed and slightly splitting).
