PARMA -- Descrizione delle Feste celebrate in Parma ... per le Auguste Nozze di sua altezza reale l'Infante Don Ferdinando colla Reale Arciduchessa Maria Amalia. Parma: [Bodoni, at the] Stamperia Reale, [1769].
2° (555 x 412mm). Parallel text in French and Italian. Half-title, four section titles. Engraved frontispiece by G. Volpato after Petitot and 36 plates, of which 6 are double-page, after Petitot by Bossi, Baratti, Zuliani, Patrini, Muzzi, Ravenet, and Perfetti, engraved title vignette, 21 engraved head- and tailpieces, and 8 engraved initials. (One double-page plate torn at fold with slight loss, occasional very light spotting.) Contemporary dark red morocco, at centre the ducal arms of Ferdinand I [Guigard I, p.81, fer 2], spine gilt with elements of the Parma arms, edges marbled and gilt (slightly worn, hinges cracked, tears in leather repaired). Provenance: MARIA CHRISTINA, QUEEN OF SPAIN (1806-78, fourth wife of Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, armorial booklabel).
In celebration of the wedding of Ferdinand I, Duke of Parma (1751-1802) and Maria Amelia, archduchess of Austria, elaborate festivities were held at Parma, designed by Petitot as chief architect at the ducal court. They included tournaments, costume balls, fireworks, a pastoral play and a Chinese fair; they are here described, with participants named, and illustrated in the fine plates. This grand production is the fifth book printed by Bodoni at the ducal printing shop. Copies appear to have been issued bound in sheep or, as here, in morocco; the later ownership of this copy by Maria Christina, queen of Spain, a relation of Ferdinand I, may suggest that it had an early association with the wedding couple. Brooks 6; Cicognara 1525.
