Lot Essay

Robert Home travelled to India in January 1791. He established a highly successful portrait practice and worked mainly in Madras, Calcutta and Lucknow. He remained in India until his death in 1834. We are grateful to Colonel Peter Walton for suggesting that the sitter's uniform may date from circa 1793.
