A Shibyama style ivory elephant group
late 19th Century
decorated in coral, turquoise, stained ivory and mother of pearl, modelled with a caparisoned elephant wearing a frilled edged saddlecloth decorated with scrolling leaves issuing from flowerheads, with its head turned to one side and with its curled trunk raised, carrying boy musicians and acrobats on its head and rear and within a pierced platform strapped on its back, with attached ladder resting on the ground with further figures climbing, crawling and seated on the side of a standing buffalo -- 6¼in. (16cm.) high, (oval signature tablet missing to base, very minor damages).
