Lot Essay

The crown finial is identical to that engraved above the arms on a set of four silver-gilt wine coasters, also hallmarked in 1792, which were sold in the Houghton sale, Christie's London, 8 December 1994, lot 96. These entrée-dishes would have formed part of the plate collection which the Margrave commissioned following his marriage in 1791. The later arms almost certainly date from around 1830; the Steede family having acquired the dishes after Margrave's death in 1828.
