Lot Essay

Paulus Dulner seems to have been a well regarded and successful craftsman, serving as Ratsherr, or representative of the craftsmen in the city council of Nüremberg. He is also recorded as having been an active and successful poet. The present tankard was made by him as a wedding gift for Bathelme (or Batholomäus) Viatis, the half-brother of Paulus' wife; the inscription is translated as,

'In the year of the Lord 1594, the 13th May, the wedding nuptials between Barthelme Viatis the younger and Felicitas Sigelman were held in Nuremberg. And Paulus Dulner their brother in law gives them this silver tankard for their wedding. And wishes the groom household God's blessing in advance. He wishes the wife a good child and God-obedient servants. And wishes them both in addition everlasting life.'
