The rounded rectangular crossbanded top with gilt-tooled red leather-lined writing-surface above three frieze drawers to each side and three pedestal drawers to each side, one side with square handles, the other with swan neck handles, on a plinth base with countersunk lignum vitae castors, the sides with carrying-handles, the handles replaced, the central frieze drawers mahogany-lined, stamped 'GILLOWS LANCASTER'

Lot Essay

A design for a related 'library table' by Gillows of London and Lancaster is illustrated in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, no. 20 and dated 1768. A similar pedestal desk was sold by the late A. J. F. MacKay of Enterkine, Christie's South Kensington, 5 April 2000, lot 72 (£25,850).
