Lot Essay

Bred in Ireland, Caurouch by Irish Birdcatcher out of a Regulator mare won three Queen's Plates in Ireland before being sent to race in England in 1847. After a poor race at Manchester, he won the Cesarewitch at the Newmarket October Meeting with odds of 30 to 1, a victory which may be commemorated in this painting.
