Lot Essay

The York and Ainsty is part of the much larger Braes of Derwent Hunt which was established circa 1820. The hounds of the York and Ainsty provided many sires for the pack.

The present composition may well have been acquired by Mr and Mrs G. Wheeler direct from the artist. The artist knew the family and had been commissioned to paint a group portrait of the family with their two children and horses. For another work formerly in the same collection, see lot 79.
