Seago made many painting trips to Venice between the early 1930s and his final visit in 1960. The Baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute, built in 1630 by Baldassare Longhena, became his favourite subject. John Reid (Edward Seago, The Landscape Art, London, 1991, p. 198) comments, 'The Salute would become the artist's favourite theme in Venice, a subject to be painted in many seasons, in many lights and from many different viewpoints: shimmering in the dry sirocco and sultry haze of midsummer, engulfed in sullen November fogs, towering above the Grand Canal on a windy day with rain in the air, or mellow in that special afterlight that follows a storm'.
