AN EGYPTIAN CARTONNAGE ANTHROPOID SARCOPHAGUS
Third Intermediate Period, Dynasty XXII, 945-712 B.C.
Gessoed and painted in red, blue, and black over linen, the deceased in a blue headdress, striped at the rear, with a solar disk device, "suspenders" crossing at his chest, his hands emerging below, with a winged ram-headed deity at the top of a single vertical band of hieroglyphic text, reading "a boon which the king gives to Osiris, the one who is in a perpetual state of bliss, the great god, the ruler of eternity, that he might cause the deceased to behold the rays of the eternal sun in providing incense, oxen and fowl, and all kinds of offerings..."
