A 16th century tribute medal to Johann Vetter
The obverse with blue and black enamel nine line inscription, 'PROVINCIÆ STYRIA CARINTHIA CARNIOLA ET COMITATVS GORITZ C DNO IONNI VETTER GRATITVDINIS ERGO OBTVLERVNT ANNO 1578', the reverse with four raised shields of Styria, Carinthia, Carniola and Gorizia, within 19th century enamel lobed frame to three pendant pearls, suspended by three gold chains and polychrome enamel surmount, overall diameter 4.8 cm., total weight 63.59 grams

Lot Essay

Johann (Hans) Vetter was created 'steirische Landmannschaft' in 1587, and later became privy councillor and President of the Exchequer of Inner-Austria; he died in Graz in 1594. By 1633, under Ferdinand III, the family titles included 'Graf und Herr Vetter von der Lilie, Freiherr zu Berg Feistritz.' The family owned castles at Feistritz, Tüsser, Thurnisch and Pettau, as well as residence in Graz.
