A Japanese brass and iron striking lantern clock with moonphase, on stand (YAGURA-DOKEI)
Second half 19th century
The rectangular case with red lacquered panels, iron top and base plates, on tubular feet, the silvered chapter ring with red lacquered revolving centre with circular moonphase aperture and fixed brass sunburst hand fixed to a brass disc engraved with characters indicating the phases of the moon, the two train movement with verge escapement and foliot with countwheel strike on domed bell; on red lacquer (distressed) pyramidal stand with bronze handle to the detachable front panel and with glazed and panelled hood
The clock -- 17½in. (44.5cm.), 63½in (161cm.) high

Lot Essay

Yagura-dokei: a lantern clock mounted on a pyramid base. Access to the weights is gained via a panel to the front of the base.
