An early German gilt-metal urn clock
Probably Augsburg. Circa 1600
The case with octagonal base resting on four winged cherub feet, the panels cast with formalised strapwork and foliage beneath a large moulding to a further concave moulding decorated with foliage beneath the foot of the urn engraved with flowerheads and further foliage, the body similarly engraved and mounted with a silver dial to the front within a gilt-metal shield frame surmounted by a lion's head, the dial with outer Roman chapters and inner Arabic 24 hour chapters, later blued steel hands, the detachable top with pierced bell gallery and two large caryatids handles (one later), the later replacement movement with twin going barrels and platform lever escapement; case and dial circa 1600, movement circa 1880
