Little is known of the origin of this unusual device, but the difference in quality between the movement and the gilt sun-ray surrounds on the one hand, and the case with its crude brass mouldings and poor quality spandrels on the other, suggests that it has been re-housed from a larger piece, probably of early 19th century date.
