Arabic manuscript on paper, a line of large black naskh above three smaller lines, the colophons each in a cartouche below reading: written for Maulana Muhammad Nathif Bey Effendi in the madrasa of the Dar al-Sultanan Ibn Sadr Asiq Yusuf, signed by 'Ali al-Shakri and Muhammad al-Rahi respectively, each a pupil of Mustafa al-Kutahi and dated 1211, the whole within a finely gold and polychrome illuminated ground, framed and glazed - 16 x 21cm.; three firmans, turkish manuscript on paper, two with 4ll. black diwani below the gold printed tughras of Abdelhamid II (1876-1909) and Mehmet V (1909-18), each with an embossed seal impression below, dated AH 1325/1907 AD and AH 1334/1915 AD respectively, the third with 10ll. red and black diwani below the gold printed tugra of Abdelhamid II, dated AH 1294/1877 AD - largest 80 x 27.5cm.; and two miniature paintings, one in Safaivd style showing a youth playing a tambourine, the other an illustrated manuscript leaf with two ladies, another leaf mounted behind - larger 19 x 12cm.

Lot Essay

A Mustafa Kutahi is also mentioned in a Qur'an dated 1222/1807. See Sotheby's 10 April 1989, lot 218.
The firman dated AH 1334 is on European paper watermarked 'Joynson Mill No.327; the one dated 1325 is on wove paper and the largest is on paper watermarked with a small five-pointed star.
