A composite armour
Late Edo Period, 19th Century
comprising a sixty-two plate sujibachi (ridged bowl) black lacquered and fitted with a black lacquered itamono-wari-jikoro (solid plate neck guard divided vertically into three sections) laced with dark blue spaced lacing, with a six tier tehen-kanamono (fitting in the top of the bowl) of mixed metals, to the front a simple black and gold lacquered iron hanbo (chin and cheek mask) with four tier uodarekake (throat guard) matching the helmet; russet lacquered iron chu-sode (medium-sized shoulder guards) in mogami style studded with gilt copper rivets and gilt fukurin (edging); matching do (cuirass) of two pieces built of horizontal plates in iron with copper gilt rivets over the russet lacquer, to the rear the gattari and machi-uke (bracket and socket) for the sashimono (flag) of white silk with a black mokko-mon (crest); detachable leather kusazuri (tassets) of black lacquered kiritsuke-kozane (imitation lamallae) with dark blue kebiki-odoshi (close space lacing), the lower edge with gilt copper rivets; black lacquered ikada-gote (sleeves); russet iron plate and mail haidate (thigh-guards); gold lacquered iron suneate (shin guards); together with an elongated wood armour box.
