CHODERLOS DE LACLOS, Pierre Ambroise François. (1741-1803). Les Liaisons dangereuses. Lettres recueillies dans une société, et publiées pour l'instruction de quelques autres, London: 1796.

2 volumes, 8° (207 x 127mm.), half titles, engraved frontispieces and 13 plates, 12 after Monnet and Mlle Gérard and Fragonard fils and one by Bertaux and Dupréel after Fragonard, brown panelled morocco gilt by Chambolle-Duru, outer panel with tulip cornerpieces, inner panel with elaborate wide floral dentelle and separate floral cornerpieces, spine with raised bands and 2 red morocco lettering-pieces, 4 compartments elaborately decorated in gilt with central floral motifs, inner dentelles, silk doublures and endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: James Hartmann (bookplate).

A VERY ATTRACTIVE SET. When Les Liaisons dangereuses was first published in 1782, as one of the earliest examples of the psychological novel, it caused an immediate sensation. "Laclos's epistolary novel offers spectacular opportunities for illustration, which are firmly grasped in this edition. Monnet's plates dominate the first volume, Mlle. Gérard's the second ... They are not likely to be superseded, however often this celebrated novel is illustrated" (Ray). Cohen-de-Ricci 235; Ray French 82. (2)
