4° (254 x 192mm.), half title, engraved frontispiece in two states, one within a wide decorative border by P. F. Martinaise after Eisen, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette by N. Le Mire, and 13 engraved plates by Lafosse, Legrand, Le Mire, Pinssio, Pasquier and Tardieu all after Eisen, one headpiece by Flipart and one tailpiece by Aliament (outer and lower margins of frontispiece shorter, occasional faint spotting), red morocco gilt by Bedford, gilt triple fillets on sides with ornate floral cornerpieces, spine gilt, gilt inner dentelles, t.e.g., others uncut.
LARGE PAPER COPY containing the frontispiece in 2 states not called for by Cohen-de-Ricci or Ray. "... the designs in this book serve as a reminder that Eisen's development of the voluptuous style usually associated with his name came when his career as an illustrator was well advanced. Eisen's plates follow the triumphant course of Folly throughout society ... The book should be sought in the superior quarto edition, for which Eisen provided the frontispiece within a fine rococco frame. It shows Folly offering his bauble to the goddess of wisdom" (Ray).
