FIRST EDITION TO CONTAIN MONNET'S ATTRACTIVE ILLUSTRATIONS, extra-illustrated with 46 plates. "This book belongs to Monnet, for its fifty-seven plates and all of its thirteen allegorical headpieces are from his hand. In Voltaire's stories he found subjects after his own heart. Their exotic settings, their gaiety, and their frank admission of the claims of the senses enabled him to work with entire freedom. In his eight plates for Zadig, six for Candide, and seven for Le huron, ou l'ingénu, he surpassed himself. His designs for Candide are the best contemporary illustrations for this masterpiece." (Ray). Cohen-de-Ricci 1038-1039; Ray French 35; Sander 2024. (3)
