THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Autograph letter signed to Messrs Chapman and Hall, 81 Champs Elyseés, Paris, 3 August [1843], one page, 4to, address panel, seal (fragment cut away at seal affecting one word).

Referring to an essay which the Foreign Quarterly Review has not published, to sales of the 'Irish Sketch Book', and asking for £30. Thackeray wishes that his correspondent would consider a book of Titmarsh's experiences in Germany but is also 'in "an interesting situation" with respect to a novel, but I want to produce a very good one and a good work of art, and such a work demands a deal of time and thinking ... every day I sigh for the Club, or the Strand, and somebody to talk to about books and the abominations of publishers'.

An early reference to Vanity Fair (1847/1848). Titmarsh's German travels were eventually published as The Kickleburys on the Rhine. Thackeray had returned briefly to Paris where his financial problems were increased by the expenses of treatment for his wife, Isabelle, who was in a mental home at Chaillot.
